    traction on straight neck curve

    traction on straight neck curve

    :Introduction

A straight neck is another name for a loss of typical cervical spinal lordosis. The neck normally demonstrates a lordotic curvature, with the opening of the curve facing the posterior side of the body. This curvature helps to support the mass of the head and provide shock absorption for the upper end of the spinal column.

A straightening of the cervical lordosis is a relatively common condition often referred to by the name military neck, since it anatomically resembles a soldier standing at attention with head high and neck extended.
This study provides an in-depth look at straight neck issues and how these structural changes are implicated in the origin and perpetuation of neck pain and upper back pain conditions.

What are the Symptoms of Military Neck?

Military Neck has two main symptoms which are pain in the neck and neck stiffness. In some cases of very mild loss of curvature of the neck, there may be no symptoms at all. The pain in the neck may radiate to the extremities in the shoulder, arms, and fingers. Another symptom that may be seen with Military Neck is headaches.

    How is Military Neck Treated?

As stated above, Military Neck can be treated but it requires a lot of time and patience on the account of the patient. The treatment depends on the severity of the conditions and the symptoms experienced by the patient. Success of the treatment for military neck also depends on how diligently the patient follows the recommendations of the physician. For temporary relief, NSAIDs and other pain medications can be taken for relief of pain associated with military neck. Neck exercises also play an important role in treatment of Military Neck. Neck traction is also an important aspect of treating Military Neck.

    Physical therapy: traction
    Definition
Traction is the act of drawing or pulling and relates to forces applied to the body to stretch a given part or to separate two or more parts. Currently, traction is used effectively in treatment of fractures. In physiatric practice, use of traction often is limited to the cervical or lumbar spine with the goal of relieving pain in, or originating from, those areas. [11]

Neck Traction for Military Neck: This is also quite helpful for Military Neck. This is done by extending the neck slightly. This is done by the physical therapist for optimal results. You should not try and do it without supervision as you may injure the neck muscles. There are several traction pillows available in the market these days which help in cervical traction to relieve Military Neck.

    Effects:

Spinal traction stretches the spine to take pressure off compressed discs. This straightens the spine and improves the body's ability to heal itself.
Candidates: Patients with spinal conditions benefit from this therapy because the traction reverses the force of gravity. It is most commonly used to treat slipped discs, bone spurs, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, facet disease, sciatica, foraminal stenosis, and pinched nerves.

    Contraindications:

No scientific reports clearly delineate contraindications for traction. The practitioner must rely on empiric information and opinion. Old age has been cited as a relative contraindication. Most practitioners agree that contraindications to cervical or lumbar traction include, but may not be limited to, the following

    • Ligamentous instability
    • Osteomyelitis
    • Diskitis
    • Primary or metastatic tumor
    • Spinal cord tumor
    • Severe osteoporosis
    • Clinical signs of myelopathy
    • Severe anxiety
    • Untreated hypertension

    :Efficacy and Outcomes

Few randomized, controlled trials address patient outcomes after cervical traction. While many studies have produced statistically significant findings, the actual clinical significance of those findings is not clear. Some studies have been published on new protocols for cervical traction, as well as on new devices for traction application. The evidence for the efficacy of these devices and methods appears to need further study before widespread application can be made or recommended
